Bike Friendly Businesses

(From the City of Eugene Website)

There are two programs to help recognize businesses as “Bike Friendly Businesses”.

The first is part of Travel Oregon and is focused on service oriented businesses that are welcoming to people who ride bikes. The program serves as a recognition and training program aimed to:

  • Provide tips and tools for how businesses can be Bike Friendly
  • Help businesses understand the importance of Oregon’s growing bicycle tourism industry
  • Highlight businesses who commit to enhancing the Oregon biking experience for visitors and Oregonians

This program is supported by Travel Lane County and provides a great way for businesses to highlight what they are doing to support people on bikes. Once a business registers they can purchase a sign made specifically for the services they offer and then use the “Bike Friendly Business” materials to highlight what they are doing to promote and support people on bikes.

The second program is part of the League of American Bicyclists and allows employers to be recognized for their efforts to encourage a more welcoming atmosphere for bicycling employees, customers and the community. The application process is more involved than the Travel Oregon program but applicants receive valuable feedback and assistance in becoming more welcoming to bicycling, receive national recognition, and are awarded a ranking as a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum level Bicycle Friendly Business. Awarded businesses are recognized in a national press release, through the League’s social media and on their interactive awards map.

In June 2019 the City of Eugene and the City of Springfield hosted two Bike Friendly Business events to help businesses register for the Travel Oregon “Bike Friendly Business” program. Through that event over a dozen businesses applied and were certified. We are making plans for 2020 to promote and encourage more businesses to become certified through both programs.

Eugene is One of The Most Bikeable Cities In The U.S.

While Eugene may be most well known for the University of Oregon, being the birthplace of Nike, and hippies but what people may not know is that it is also one of the most bikeable cities in the U.S. In fact, with a Bike Score of 71 Eugene narrowly edged out Seattle and is tied with cities like San Francisco and Denver in terms of bikeability.

The third largest city in Oregon, Eugene is made so bike friendly largely due to the miles of bike trails and bike lanes in the city. In fact, Track Town has over 20 bike trails. When you combine all those bike trails and lanes with the fact that Eugene has relatively few hills for bicyclists to contend with, you have a city that is a breeze to get around on two wheels.

But all that biking infrastructure would be pretty useless if bicyclists didn’t have anywhere to go. Luckily for them, Eugene has about 650 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops and the city is home to 16 breweries, including craft beer juggernaut, Ninkasi Brewing Co. This means popular neighborhoods like Downtown Eugene, the University district(s), Whiteaker, Jefferson, and Far West all have Bike Scores of 90 or higher.

Yet another component to Eugene’s high-ranking Bike Score, is the bike sharing program PeaceHealth Rides. The easy to use cornflower blue bikes are only $1 per 15 minutes $15 a month and are unlocked via the app. With plenty of bikes available across the city (including adaptive bikes for the city’s handicap community), PeaceHealth Rides has proven very popular among Eugeneans since it launched and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Moving forward, you can expect the Bike Score of Eugene to continue to rise. In 2021 the city will be hosting the IAAF World Track and Field Championships —the first time the event has been held in the United States —and the city is making strides to improve their biking and track infrastructure before the event 2,000 competitors descend on Track Town. This is great news for Eugeneans, as bicycling is not only efficient but also saves about $10 for every 10 miles biked, reduced the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50 percent, and saves an entire pound of CO2per mile biked.

Bike Score is calculated based on measurements of a city’s bike infrastructure (bike lanes, trails, etc.), hills, destinations and road connectivity, and the number bike commuters in the city. Bike lane score is determined using data from OpenStreetMap, a city’s “hilliness” is calculated utilizing data made available by the United States Geological Survey’s National Elevation Dataset, and destination and connectivity are calculated using a modified version of Walk Score.
