GEARs Quick Guide:
Safe Cycling Practices and Rider Responsibilities
Before ride, check tire pressure, brakes, chain, cranks. Bring basic tools and water. Carry an emergency contact number that can be found by others.
Be seen. Wear bright clothing, use lights especially in poor visibility. Make eye contact with others. NEVER assume you have been seen by drivers. Use a mirror.
Wear a helmet.
Be on time. Sign the registration waiver form. Listen to Ride Leader and follow instructions.
Ride in the appropriate pace group, see pace guidelines. Don’t over estimate abilities.
Communicate. Make your intentions clear with words and hand signals. Announce STOPPING when you are making a stop. Communicate SLOWING or road hazards. Do not pass on the right.
15 mph maximum on the multi-user path, slower if necessary. Yield to pedestrians. It is a shared path.
Be predictable. Signal turns and when braking. Obey traffic laws. Treat stop signs and blinking red lights as a yield sign. Red traffic light is a complete stop.
When stopping at designated regrouping points or for repair, move completely off the road. Wait for all riders at regrouping points. Let the Ride Leader know if you plan to leave the ride.
Anticipate conditions & plan ahead. Watch for turning cars and road hazards. Allow adequate distance when following other cyclists, avoid overlapping wheels. Fenders are recommenced as a courtesy to other riders on wet days.
Think for yourself. Do not call CLEAR at intersections and turns. Make your own decisions. Don’t rely on others.
Ride single file when rear riders call CAR BACK or on busy roads and highways.
