LiveMove Speaker Series: Rob Sadowsky Discusses the State of the Active Transportation Movement in Oregon

Active transportation leader Rob Sadowsky will discuss the state of bicycling and walking in Oregon at the Downtown Athletic Center ballroom in Eugene on Thursday, November 29th at 6pm. This event is open to the public.

Sadowsky joined the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA), a Portland-based active transportation advocacy group, as executive director in June 2010. Rob will discuss the current state of active transportation in Oregon, including what we can expect from federal and state funding, emerging legislative priorities of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, what’s up and coming in the bicycling and pedestrian movement, and a personal reflection on being in Oregon for two years and how it compares to the rest of America.

Previously, Rob served as Executive Director of the Active Transportation Alliance in Chicago, Illinois for six years from 2004 to 2010. He has more than 25 years of non-profit advocacy and management experience working on issues of affordable housing, community economic development and transportation policy. He serves on the board of the Alliance for Biking and Walking, Institute for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation and the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium. He serves on the State of Oregon’s Access Management Oversight Task Force.

At 5pm, LiveMove will host a social hour before Sadowsky’s presentation at 6pm, both in the Downtown Athletic Club’s ballroom. Bike shop Arriving by Bike will sponsor a raffle for free bike gear. Sadowsky is the second speaker in the 2012-2013 LiveMove speaker series. The series brings transportation and planning professionals to Eugene to speak on topics around sustainable transportation and livability issues.

LAB League Certified Instructor training in Portland, July 6-8

Via LeeAnne from the BTA (I also should have spread the word sooner but there you have it).  I’ll be an assistant LCI Coach for this course and hopefully certified to lead Seminars in the future so that we might be able to have one locally.

Road One/Traffic Skills 101 is a prerequisite for this program. There just happens to be one being held in Eugene June 23/24- Register here! There is also one being offered in Bend next week (June 21-23)- Register here.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance is hosting an League of American Bicyclists (LAB) League Certified Instructor (LCI) Training on July 6-8 and I have done a terrible job telling people about it.  There are 5 spots still available in the seminar and I need at least 3 more people to sign up for it to actually happen.  Please consider signing someone from your organization up if you would like to have a staffer who can teach the League’s adult education program (Traffic Skills 101).

More info and to register click HERE! The deadline for signing up is Friday 6/15 with a possibility to extend to Wednesday, 6/20, and the cost is $300 plus a LAB membership year long membership.  Sorry again for the short notice (see?… a terrible job).

My goal for hosting this seminar is to further entice Physical educators and Health teachers at elementary schools and middle schools in Oregon to be trained to teach bike safety education to students.  I will incorporate the Traffic Skills 101 class into the curriculum training to give the teachers as many certifications as possible while being trained. This will help principals, teachers, administrators and parents get behind this needed education program.  Please help me promote bike safety education and prepare teachers by helping me fill this LAB LCI training!  If you were ever planning to take this course, let it be now!
Thanks so much and let me know if you have any questions.

Bike Safety Education- Last Volunteer Opportunity Before Summer

From Clare with the BTA. These classes are the foundation for future bikers and drivers on our roads. These great classes only happen because we have volunteers help out on these essential neighborhood rides. This class is trying out 4J’s brand new bike fleet, the start of a more intense and complete bicycle safety education program for the district.

—–

Hey everyone,

I am looking for a few more volunteers this Wednesday, June 15th, at Monroe Middle School for our community ride.  For all of you who have been thinking about joining us on a community ride and haven’t quite gotten the chance, this Wednesday is the last day of bike safety this spring!  So, come on out and ride with us!  It will hopefully be a beautiful day.

The class times for this Wednesday, June 15th, at Monroe Middle School are:

3rd period  10:50-11:48
5th period  1:30-2:21
6th period   2:25-3:15

Come for one class or come for all three! As a volunteer you will be riding along with the students providing an extra set of eyes on the road.  You can also help to make sure every student stops at stops signs or does their turns properly.  How much you are involved is up to you.  I am just happy to have a few extra sets of eyes on the road with us.

If you are interested in joining us on our community ride this Wednesday, send me an email and let me know which classes you can ride with Clare Gordon (gordonc@bta4bikes.org).

Happy biking,

Clare Gordon

Attend the Eugene Riverfront Celebration this Saturday!

Riverfront Celebration!

Saturday, April 24th, 10 am – 4 pm
South Bank Path between EWEB and Autzen Footbridge

The BTA has been keeping tabs on Connecting Eugene’s fight against the development of the Oregon Research Institute building along the Willamette River. Here’s an update on what’s happened since January.

• Connecting Eugene appealed the City’s decision to grant an extension of a Conditional Use Permit to the University of Oregon. This appeal may take several months or more to resolve. Even after this issue is resolved the University must obtain a building permit and demonstrate that the proposed development is consistent with the 1988 Master Plan.

• Members of Connecting Eugene have met with Mayor Piercy and Councilor Alan Zalenka to discuss viable alternative sites for the Oregon Research Institute Building–including a site within the Riverfront Research Park designated for office buildings.

• The faculty of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, the Graduate Teaching Fellow Federation (GTFF), and the Graduate Evolutionary Biology and Ecology Students have all passed resolutions opposing development north of the railroad tracks until a new master plan has been developed. These resolutions join many previous resolutions by UO students and faculty, and over 900 petition signers like yourselves.

• Amelie Rousseau was elected ASUO President. She strongly opposes development along the riverfront.

• EWEB (Eugene Water and Electric Board) continues to engage the public in planning the redevelopment of their site while the University of Oregon keeps the door closed to public involvement on their property just upstream from EWEB.
