2013 University of Oregon Kit Orders

From the UO Cycling Team:
The University of Oregon Cycling Team is now accepting orders for our 2013 team kit. I want to personally apologize for the delay in getting this order started. We struggled through several redesigns before we were confident that the quality of our artwork matched the quality of these materials. Thank you for your patience. We are extremely excited to offer you an entirely new product line, featuring top-quality clothing by Castelli Sportful America and the stellar design work of current team member Scott Warneke and UO Cycling alumnus McKenzie Sampson. You will find the current design concepts below. Please know that while the overall concepts will stay the same, the UO licensing process and several pending sponsorships will likely necessitate slight changes in the designs between ordering and production.

UO Bike Program "Fix-It Network" Celebration

I am happy to announce that the UO Bike Program’s network of self-service bike repair stations is nearing completion! You are cordially invited to join us in celebrating the installation of the final Fix-It Station at 13th and University on Wednesday, November 7th at 12:30pm.

Thanks to the Student Sustainability Fund, the ASUO Over-realized Fund, and Greater Eugene Area Riders, we will have six locations across campus. Students, faculty, and staff can put their bike in a stand and perform minor repairs. Since they are conveniently located at prominent destinations on campus, bicycle commuters will find it easy to pump up their tires in between class or adjust their brakes before riding home. See attached image for a poster displaying the station locations.

A big THANK YOU to Campus Planning and Campus Operations for putting in many hours to help us site and performing the installation of the Fixit Stations! Also with help from EMU Marketing and the Emerald Media Group, we created maintenance videos that can be accessed via QR codes at the Fix-It Stations.
The Fix-It network is just one more way that we are supporting and promoting bicycling at the University of Oregon. We already received national recognition for our recent efforts. The League of American Bicyclists, a national advocate and lobbying organization for bicycling, published an article the Bike Program contributed to in this issue of their quarterly magazine, American Bicyclist. You can read the full magazine online (we are on pg 26-27).
We have received lots of positive feedback about the stations, and we will continue to look for opportunities to promote these great resources, install more stations around campus, and continue to look for other ways to maintain our leadership as a Bike Friendly University.
Best regards,
Briana

Sun, Surf and Suds An August Tour Down the Oregon Coast

GEARs General Meeting presentation
Tuesday 10/23 6-8pm
Countryside Pizza 645 River Road

Please join Ray Hull and Garry Swanson as they ride us down the beautiful Oregon Coast! A ten-day trip that covered 500 miles with a highest mileage day of 58 and a low of 23. Come and enjoy the wonderful coastal towns and roadways that make this trip a must do for the beauty and majesty of the Oregon Coast! They will talk about roads, traffic, wonderful campgrounds and stops along the way. The sun was bright the surf very low and there were several opportunities to enjoy “suds” at the end of a ride day! This is a must see if you ever thought of riding the coast or a great way to add your thoughts to the trip for those of you that are veterans of an Oregon Coast ride. Your presence is requested to make this a great evening!

GEARs Board Endorses Bond Measure 20-197

The Eugene City Council has called for a vote on a measure authorizing the issuance of a maximum of $43 million of general obligation bonds to fund street preservation projects and bicycle and pedestrian projects. The $43 million is the total for five years, and it represents $8 million in the first year, plus an inflation factor of 4% per year for the remaining four years.

City property taxes would be collected to pay for the bonds. The bond measure is expected to cost an average of $0.65 per $1,000 of assessed value each year for five years. For an average homeowner in Eugene, this would be about $127 per year. This rate is also the approximate average tax rate levied over the five years of the 2008 bond measure. The taxes would first be levied in November 2014, after the 2008 bond taxes end in 2013.

The Measure on the Nov 6 ballot would allocate an average of $516,000 annually for five years to support bicycle and pedestrian projects, guided by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, City staff, and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

Get Confident, Stay Savvy! Take a Class

Every month GEARs teaches a 3 hour Confident Cycling class that is filled with people going through the Municipal Court diversion program for cyclists who get traffic tickets for violations and want an alternative to paying the fines. The class is also a great one for those just starting to ride (again) and even for well seasoned cyclists who want to sharpen their game and learn how to teach others to ride through their words and actions.
Every few months the additional 6 hour Traffic Skills on-road portion of the class is also taught. This 9 hour Confident Cycling 101 class is a League of American Bicyclists certified course taught by certified instructors. It’s also the first step to becoming a certified instructor yourself. It’s the basis for our middle school bike safety education course. It’s an awesome course and every cyclist should take it.

This weekend (Sept. 22-23) we still need at least two more attendees to hold the second portion of the class (we have a 6 person minimum).

Register for the class here!
