Programs

Education

Bike Education Courses offered by GEARs, SRTS, and the City of Eugene. These classes follow the curriculum of the League of American Bicyclists. Registration for classes is available online or by calling Paul at 687-0487.

Bike Commute Workshops -This 1-hour class is recommended for bike commuters over age 16 and of all skill levels. It offers a lot of good info on safety and responsibilities. Bicycle checks, laws pertaining to bicyclists, and techniques for avoiding crashes are part of this workshop. See schedule.

Street Skills 1 -This 3-hour class is recommended for bicyclists over age 16 and of all skill levels. It offers training needed to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. Bicycle safety checks, laws pertaining to bicyclists, and techniques for avoiding crashes are part of this curriculum. Take before Street Skills II for a complete course. $20 See schedule.

Street Skills 2 -This 6-hour class follows up on Street Skills 1 (required) with on-bike skills, crash avoidance techniques and basic bicycle mechanics. After completion of both classes riders will have the League of American Bicyclists Road 1 certification. $30 See schedule.

Commuter Skills -This class is for adult cyclists who wish to explore the possibility of commuting to work or school by bike. This three hour course covers topics including route selection, bicycle choice, dealing with cargo and clothing, bike parking, lighting, reflection, and foul weather riding. $25 See schedule.

Kids 1 This class is designed for parents and young children grades K-3. Instructors explain how to teach a child to ride a bike, including a bicycle safety check, helmet fitting and bike sizing. Price is for one child and one parent. $25 See schedule.

Rides and Events

Blackberry bRamble and Jamboree -GEARS Annual Bicycling event features a family-oriented community ride through Eugene’s neighborhoods and parks on Saturday, August 2 followed by the annual supported century/metric century road ride on Sunday, August 3. Public Awareness

We are currently developing, in partnership with the BTA, a campaign that will work to boost attentiveness and ease the tension between the road users. An update will be available here as soon as it is ready.

Community Building

Bike Day at the Science Factory -An annual celebration of bicycling featuring bike rides, entertainment, bike skills/safety, prizes, free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and bike blended smoothies. All Bike Day events are free. Join in the fun on Saturday, June 7, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Science Factory.

GEARS Bike Fair -Gear up for the summer cycling season with a chance to see new bikes/products from local bike shops, plan rides for the coming season, and win great prizes! Tuesday evening, June 10 at the Vets Club, 1626 Willamette.

Kidical Mass-a short, fun family ride through neighborhood streets and ending with treats and or play. Kidical Mass occurs on the third Friday of each month. The next ride starts at Monroe Park, 10th Ave. & Monroe on June 20th at 6 p.m. See the website at: KidicalMass.org
