[...] The GEARS news blog has a detailed account of the meeting and analysis. A quote from that analysis sums up the resulting mood of the cycling advocacy: Having three council members who voted to move bike/ped projects to the bottom of the last priority is disheartening to say the least and to see the type of projects that should just naturally be part of any complete street talked about being taken off and then highlighted as ’special bike/ped’ projects sort of rubs salt in the wound. These kind of improvements don’t complete an incomplete network, they simply add what should have been added already. [...]

This seems like a great example of how the city council is going to feel like they owe the city's cyclists better accommodations elsewhere after voting against them on the Crest project. Not!

When we walk away from an opportunity to stand up for the rights and needs of cyclists (no matter how we each feel about the Crest project), we send the exact wrong message to the city council, mayor and city manager.

Not mentioned above, but did our mayor or any city councilor make any sort of statement, stand or plea in support of moving bike/ped funding way up the chain?

I think celebrating great achievements like a multi-use bridge that connects neighborhoods to existing infrastructure is good (important even) but I do agree that it can get overemphasized, especially by elected officials, over the less grandiose projects.

However, we do need to raise the level of discussion regarding funding priorities and the need to complete the network.

Re: Candidates, I think it is something GEARs will be working on in the coming months, finding out which candidates are the most interested in building a sustainable community focused on active transportation.

What message does it give to have cyclists attend the photo ops promoting the new bridge and then depreciate that component as part of the overall funding? Maybe we need more discretion about the "whoopee" factor before we start thanking everyone (including ourselves) for gains that we later see as overemphasized by our elected officials.

It time for both of you to consider running for the city council.

How discouraging. Thanks to everyone who has worked to secure money for active transportation.

Does anyone know of bike-friendly candidates to replace the Polling, Clark, and Solomon's chosen replacement?
