From the UO Cycling Team:
The University of Oregon Cycling Team is now accepting orders for our 2013 team kit. I want to personally apologize for the delay in getting this order started. UO Bike Program "Fix-It Network" Celebration

I am happy to announce that the UO Bike Program’s network of self-service bike repair stations is nearing completion! You are cordially invited to join us in celebrating the installation of the final Fix-It Station at 13th and University on Wednesday, November 7th at 12:30pm.

Thanks to the Student Sustainability Fund, the ASUO Over-realized Fund, and Greater Eugene Area Riders, we will have six locations across campus. Students, faculty, and staff can put their bike in a stand and perform minor repairs. Since they are conveniently located at prominent destinations on campus, bicycle commuters will find it easy to pump up their tires in between class or adjust their brakes before riding home. See attached image for a poster displaying the station locations.

A big THANK YOU to Campus Planning and Campus Operations for putting in many hours to help us site and performing the installation of the Fixit Stations! Also with help from EMU Marketing and the Emerald Media Group, we created maintenance videos that can be accessed via QR codes at the Fix-It Stations.
The Fix-It network is just one more way that we are supporting and promoting bicycling at the University of Oregon. We already received national recognition for our recent efforts. The League of American Bicyclists, a national advocate and lobbying organization for bicycling, published an article the Bike Program contributed to in this issue of their quarterly magazine, American Bicyclist. You can read the full magazine online (we are on pg 26-27).
We have received lots of positive feedback about the stations, and we will continue to look for opportunities to promote these great resources, install more stations around campus, and continue to look for other ways to maintain our leadership as a Bike Friendly University.
Best regards,
Briana

Willie Weir Returns to Eugene

Come join us, the Outdoor Program as we host Willie Weir and Any Port in a Storm: Cycling & Wild Camping Through Portugal.

Willie Weir will tell us stories of amazing, scenic, low-trafficked roads and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Wild, dramatic coastline, glacial valleys, as well as ancient cities paved in cobblestone. In crisscrossing the bicycle-friendly country of Portugal, Willie and his wife Kat consumed large quantities of port, wine and cheese, and lived to tell the tale. And they didn’t break the bank either but they were accosted by a herd of sheep, frightened out of their minds by a still unknown beast and almost blown off a dune into the Atlantic! Even if you never plan to set foot (or tire) in Portugal, you’ll want to come out and be entertained and inspired by Willie’s stunning images and storytelling.

UO Bike Program To Install Five Self-service Bike Repair Stations

It’s been so great to see the energy grow on the UO campus with both the LiveMove student group and the UO Bike Program continually pushing for positive changes to the campus area for cyclists. The latest news from the Bike Program involves some assistance from GEARs Education to help them purchase five self-service bike repair stations and to create educational material for the campus area. We look forward to continuing to work with these student groups to grow cycling in our community at large!

—–News Release—-

The University of Oregon Bike Program is leading a project to install a network of five self-service bike repair stations around the UO campus, to support and encourage bicycle transportation for our campus community.  The Bike Program has received $7,000 in support from the UO Sustainability Center’s Student Sustainability Fund, and $750 from the Greater Eugene Area Riders to pay for four stands and educational materials.  A fifth stand will be paid for with funds left over from a grant for another project from the Associated Students of the University of Oregon, which came in under budget.

The stands, which will be installed in central, high-visibility locations on campus, will provide bicycle users with air, tools, and a stable spot to hoist their bike for maintenance.  Each station will include an info panel with bike repair and safety information, as well as directions to our campus DIY repair shop in the Outdoor Program Barn.  Web resources will include new how-to-fix-your-bike videos produced by the UO Bike Program in partnership with Erb Memorial Union Marketing and the Oregon Daily Emerald.

“It will be great to see these repair stands around campus as reminders of the university’s commitment to sustainability and active transportation.  We all see reminders of our societal commitment to cars every day.  I think this project sends a strong message about our priorities as a community,” said Ted Sweeney, the student coordinator of the UO Bike Program. “People need to be able to trust their bicycles to get them where they need to go every day, and knowing that tools and air are always nearby might give some the confidence they need to start commuting by bike.”

The Bike Program is working with staff in the Department of Campus Planning and Real Estate to approve the final siting for the FixIt stands, and hopes to install the network by the end of spring quarter 2012.

More about the UO Bike Program: The University of Oregon Bike Program, a branch of the UO Outdoor Program, works to connect students with bicycles. Since 2008, the student-run program has offered low-cost bicycle loans, a free do-it-yourself bike maintenance shop, and related classes and events for the UO Community.

"If We Build It…" Photo Exhibit

Eugene undertook a step toward becoming more bicycle friendly when it installed a two-way bike lane on Alder Street this summer, separating bicycles from moving cars. While the Alder Street cycle track was under construction, 11 University of Oregon students were exploring the home of numerous such cycle tracks – The Netherlands – on a study abroad course.
The course, “Sustainable Bicycle Transportation,” inspired the students to create a photography exhibit to share their experiences and to help facilitate a community conversation about what other bicycle innovations might be possible in the Eugene-Springfield area.

The exhibit, which is free, opens Thursday, Nov. 3, at Humble Beagle, 2435 Hilyard St., from 6-8 p.m. Photos will be on exhibit until Thursday, Nov. 17.
