7/09 Board Meeting Minutes

GEARS BOARD MEETING, JULY 13, 2009
At Keystone Café, 7-8:30 pm

PRESENT: Sue and Mike Harshbarger, Bob Ransom, Paul Adkins, Jay Klein, Richard Hughes, Gary Cook, Michal Young, Jim Colbert, Mel Huey, Jan Spencer

MINUTES: of previous meeting were accepted

TREASURER: Richard presented this report, attached

MEMBERSHIP: Michal reported that memberships are rolling in. Cards are ready for the newsletter, but we are behind on stickers, and that businesses are still accepting stickers dated 2008. . At present, we have about 200 members. Michal noted that family memberships need to capture all names in the family, and this is being worked on.

2009 APPRECIATION AWARD: Sue Harshbarger of Travel Lane County brought this award to the board meeting as no one from Gears was able to attend the award dinner.

BIKE REWARD PROGRAM: Eugene Weekly will have an article about the program in the next issue.

RIDE MAPS: Paul, Rob and Gary met recently to discuss the maps. Rob has cue sheets in PDF files with descriptions for about 200 rides which will go on the website shortly. Rides are numbered, and linked by area. They are grouped by difficulty and then distance.

LEAVING :-( : Jay will shortly be moving to Portland. Gary proposed that we have Sue put notice in the newsletter that we are seeking a Vice President for 2 months until the November election.

BY-LAWS: Jay will look over the bylaws, to prepare them for the next meeting. A Vote is scheduled for September at a General Meeting.

ADOPT-A-PATH: Gary said that Gears had a section of the bike path for many years but lost the location. Another location had been arranged, but then fell through. Paul will speak to the city about Gears becoming active in this program once again.

BIKE STING OPERATION: There was a discussion about assisting the Eugene Police Department with a Sting operation. Richard noted that the cost could be high. Gary will speak with the police department further.

PROMENADE: Jan Spencer talked about this event to be held July 19th, from 1-5pm on the bike path, involving city and neighbourhood groups, and a River House bike ride.
Paul will man a table with Gears information

JAMBOREE & BRAMBLE: Richard and Jim have put together a 6 page To-Do document for the bRamble and plan to get together with Shane and Lindsay on the Jamboree. There was a discussion on road marking, with Gary noting it had been done previously up to 2 weeks ahead of event, Jim wants to do the day before, and they will work together on this issue.
The Registration data base has been done, with about 70 people registered to date.
Maps have been made easier to read, with one for each ride.
Chico bags were demonstrated, Richard reported will sell for $5 at the Jamboree, but will be given away at the bRamble.
Richard suggested giving water bottles left over from previous years to employees of sponsors.
Crow food stop: Will be manned by Team in Training from Portland.

BIKE LIGHTS PARADE: Rob spoke about a Bike Light Parade was held 2 years ago, the 3rd modern light parade, and the 111th anniversary of the 1898 Bike Light Parade. He would like to see a Bike Light Parade become a part of the Eugene Celebration, and wants to see the program grow, to add prizes, get businesses involved. He has given away 400 sets of bike lights. He said a local person is needed to grow the program.
